Who was Saint Anthony Mary Claret?
Anthony Mary Claret was a nineteenth century Spanish priest and missionary who founded the Claretians, a community of priests and brothers. He spent his life bringing Christ’s message to people through preaching, teaching, and practical care.
He went from town to town to preach in Catalonia. Claret walked as a pilgrim, carrying a Bible and prayer book, and spoke to people where they lived. His mission began with making the Gospel accessible.
Prayer and love for the Eucharist and Mary shaped his work. Claret’s preaching flowed from a life centered on Christ, and he hoped others would come to know Christ through the words and care they received.
In 1849, he founded the Missionary Sons of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Claret gathered companions so that preaching could continue through a shared mission. His response to the Gospel became a service others could carry forward.
As archbishop in Cuba, Claret travelled across his diocese and worked to improve its religious life. He also addressed widespread poverty. His care brought resistance, and he was wounded in an attack at Holguín.
Claret used books as well as sermons to teach the faith. He helped establish a religious publishing work that made Catholic reading available to many. When a conversation cannot reach everyone, clear and thoughtful writing can serve.
Claret’s lasting witness is a faith that moves outward. He preached, founded a missionary community, and served people as their bishop. His example shows how love of Christ can guide the gifts and means we already have.
