Who was Saint Apollinaris?
At the seashore of Classis, the salt wind met Apollinaris with a strange silence. Accounts tell of him found half dead, then sheltered by Christians, as if the Gospel itself had been bruised, yet would not stay hidden.
In the early days of his shepherding, Apollinaris scattered the inscrutable riches of Christ among the nations. The grain in his icon invites us to picture faith as something meant to take root, to ripen, and to feed others with hope.
Called to guide Ravenna, Apollinaris preached until idolaters stirred, until he was beaten and driven out. Yet he did not vanish. He returned, again and again, as if the city could not finish hearing the name of Jesus.
When his presence unsettled the public gods, even the oracles fell silent. Apollinaris moved through the province and carried the same message, with preaching and miracles that turned curiosity into conversion, and conversion into courage for others.
Persecution sharpened into cruelty. He was compelled to walk on burning coals, then struck, hacked, and overwhelmed by punishments meant to end his voice. Still, he endured, because martyrdom was not spectacle to him, but fidelity.
After new decrees of banishment, Apollinaris was concealed for a time, hidden with the help of Christians who refused to abandon their bishop. Those quiet moments do not look heroic, but they reveal a holiness that waits, prays, and persists.
Even when details are uncertain, the Church remembers. His name appears in the canon of the Milanese Mass, and St Peter Chrysologus speaks of him as the first bishop of Ravenna and as a martyr. Apollinaris remains, so faith has a witness again.
What can we learn from Saint Apollinaris today?
- Offer one small act of courage when faith is treated as foolish.
- Bring comfort to someone suffering, and speak hope from Christ.
- Choose truth with gentleness, even when you could stay silent.
Apollinaris matters today because his life shows that Christ’s light is not extinguished by violence, pressure, or concealment. The Church asks us to follow the pattern he displayed through teaching and martyrdom, so that our own perseverance becomes a sign that the Gospel is real.
