Who was Saint John Eudes?

John Eudes was born in Ri, a village in Normandy. His parents had prayed at a shrine for a child. Nine months later, John was born. He grew up on a farm with five younger siblings. At nine, after being struck by another boy, he quietly offered his other cheek. His story had begun.

At fourteen, John entered a Jesuit school in Caen. His parents hoped he would marry and manage the family farm. John had already made a private promise to remain celibate, unmarried for God. He studied with unusual seriousness. Soon, a decision about his future would test both his courage and his family’s wishes.

John joined the Oratory, a community of priests devoted to holiness and ministry. His teachers were Pierre de Bérulle and Charles de Condren. They saw his gifts and allowed him to preach before priestly ordination. Then plague spread through Normandy. John volunteered to serve the sick. He walked toward danger while others fled.

During another plague outbreak in Caen, John feared infecting his fellow priests. He moved into a large wooden cask placed in a field. Each day, people from a nearby convent brought him food. From that strange shelter, he continued serving the sick and preparing for the missions that would define his ministry.

For ten years, John traveled across France preaching parish missions. He spoke from pulpits, then spent long hours hearing confessions. He preached one hundred ten missions during his life. People remembered how deeply his words reached the heart. His work soon revealed a need that preaching alone could not answer.

A woman named Madeleine Lamy challenged John to protect women who had turned away from sinful lives. She asked why he kept visiting churches while these women lacked a safe home. Her words stayed with him. In 1641, John rented a house in Caen where they could live, work, and begin again.

John believed the Church also needed well formed priests. In 1643, he left the Oratory and founded the Congregation of Jesus and Mary in Caen. Its priests trained future parish clergy. He later founded seminaries in several French dioceses. He also shaped public devotion to the Sacred Hearts through prayer, preaching, and liturgy.

John faced strong opposition from some religious groups, and approval for his congregation did not come easily. He continued anyway. After preaching his final mission in Saint Lô during severe winter weather, his health failed. He spent his remaining days writing about the Heart of Mary. He completed the work shortly before death.

John Eudes died peacefully in Caen after a life spent preaching, forming priests, sheltering penitents, and honoring the Hearts of Jesus and Mary. His congregation continued its work. The Church later recognized his holiness and canonized him. His liturgical devotion to the Sacred Heart had already spread far beyond Normandy.
