Who was Saint Joseph of Cupertino?
Joseph was born in Cupertino in 1603. His father died before his birth, leaving debts behind. His mother had to give birth in a stable after creditors forced the family from their home. As a child, Joseph suffered illness and poverty. His future seemed fragile from the beginning.
Joseph struggled at school and later worked as a shoemaker. He often became absorbed during prayer, sometimes losing awareness of the people around him. The children mocked him with a nickname meaning open mouth. His temper was also difficult. His mother patiently trained him in self control.
At seventeen, Joseph asked to join the Conventual Franciscans, a religious order following Saint Francis. They refused him because he knew so little. The Capuchins later accepted him as a lay brother, but his unusual ecstasies made ordinary work difficult. He was dismissed again. One door remained open.
Joseph was finally welcomed at the convent of La Grotella as a helper in the stable. He cleaned, carried, obeyed, and served quietly. The friars saw his humility and charity toward the poor. His simple service led to studies for the priesthood. In 1628, he was ordained.
Joseph knew one Gospel passage especially well. During his examination for the diaconate, the bishop opened the Gospel at that very passage and asked him to explain it. Joseph answered successfully. At his later priesthood examination, the prepared candidates did so well that all were admitted, including Joseph.
During Mass or the Divine Office, Joseph sometimes entered ecstasy, a state of absorbed prayer. Witnesses reported that he was lifted from the ground. These events caused crowds and confusion. For many years, his superiors kept him from public worship and assigned him a private chapel. Joseph accepted this quietly.
Joseph was moved from house to house and questioned by church authorities. He endured suspicion, loneliness, and spiritual dryness. He remained obedient and cheerful. He died at Osimo on September 18, 1663. After his death, devotion spread, and the Church canonized him in 1767.
