Who was Saint Junípero Serra?

When Junípero Serra entered the Franciscan Order, he chose a life that was not first his own. In that first surrender, we learn that mission begins with obedience, not with comfort, and we can begin today.

A leg injury happened while he traveled on foot, and it stayed with him. He did not turn back. We see that weakness is not disqualifying when love keeps walking, step by step, toward God.

Assigned to the Sierra Gorda missions, he learned a people’s language and translated the catechism for them. Today, evangelization asks for listening that reaches the heart, and for patient teaching that makes faith intelligible.

When he founded the first mission on the coast and kept building more, he was not chasing numbers. He brought the Word so that thousands could receive baptism. Let us build places of grace, especially where faith is young.

Accounts of Serra's preaching describe severe bodily penance. For us, repentance can take the form of prayer, honest confession, making amends, and practical generosity. Seek spiritual guidance for penitential practices. Taking reasonable care of your health belongs to Christian responsibility.

Serra continued his ministry despite painful illness. His perseverance invites reflection on faithful service within our own circumstances. Receiving appropriate medical care and accepting needed rest can support that service. Christian love includes responsible care for the life and health God has entrusted to us.

When difficulties arose, he presented the case before leaders and drafted a Representación in thirty two articles. His legacy reminds us that charity uses clear truth. Stand up for what is right in your duty and your speech.

What can we learn from Saint Junípero Serra today?

Today Junípero Serra teaches that the Gospel is carried not by headlines but by labor. God counted many peoples within His Church through Serra’s priestly work. Through his intercession, we join our hearts to the Lord in love, so we can bring His Son’s image to everyone we meet.
