Who was Saint Nicodemus?

Nicodemus was a Pharisee and a leader of the Jews. He had watched Jesus and saw signs that pointed beyond ordinary power. Still he came carefully, by night, to meet Jesus in private. He greeted him respectfully and said they knew God was with him. The night conversation opened a new door.

Nicodemus listened to Jesus speak about being born from above. He tried to follow, but his mind went to the obvious question. How could anyone enter the mother’s womb a second time? Jesus answered that new life comes from water and Spirit. The wind of God’s work moves unseen, and Nicodemus had to keep thinking.

During the dispute about Jesus at the Feast of Tabernacles, Nicodemus challenged the other leaders. He asked whether their law allowed someone to be condemned without first being heard. His colleagues answered with ridicule. John's Gospel places this exchange during Jesus' public ministry, before the events of his Passion.

When the passion ended, Nicodemus came into the burial scene with heavy, costly spices. He brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds, to help prepare the Lord’s body. His hands were practical. His faith showed up as careful work. The dead Christ received what he had learned in the living conversation.

In a later retelling, Nicodemus is shown speaking directly to Pilate, asking for the condemned man’s release. He argues that if the signs are from God, they will stand. The crowd answers with furious jeers and rage. Nicodemus stays standing anyway. The same courage that began at night now stood in a courtroom.

Aquinas notes that Nicodemus first came to Jesus by night, then appeared more openly at the burial. Even with fear, he carried and purchased the spices with care. He sheltered the body with myrrh and aloes as if God could keep it from corruption. And then came his hidden end.

Nobody knows the day Nicodemus died. His name survives because he defended Jesus and stood beside the burial companions. Centuries later, the Roman Martyrology speaks of his relics being found on August 3. That is why his story pulls us forward today to speak and to serve.

What can we learn from Saint Nicodemus today?

  • Tonight, sit quietly and bring Jesus one honest question like Nicodemus.
  • Prepare a small gift for the dead, and offer it for mercy.
  • When faith is mocked, speak one calm defense for Christ, not heat.

Saint Nicodemus matters today because his faith grew in steps. It began as a night visit, then it took courage in public, then it showed itself in costly, careful love at the burial. When we fear embarrassment, his story reminds us that Christ can make our hidden beginnings move.
