Who was Saint Pacificus of San Severino?

Carlo Antonio Divini was born in San Severino on 1 March 1653. He lost his parents soon after his confirmation. His maternal uncle, an archdeacon, helped raise him. The boy grew up through hardship in the March of Ancona. At seventeen, he entered the Franciscan order and received a new name.

In December 1670, Carlo entered the Reformati, a stricter branch of the Franciscan order. He took the name Pacificus. The name pointed toward peace, though his early years remained difficult. He studied, learned religious discipline, and prepared for priesthood. His quiet training was leading toward work among ordinary people.

Pacificus was ordained a priest on 4 June 1678. Soon afterward, his superiors appointed him to teach philosophy to younger friars. He served as a lecturer from 1680 to 1683. Then he asked to preach among villages and hamlets. His turning point came when study became direct service.

For several years, Pacificus traveled through the surrounding countryside as a missionary. His simple sermons drew people to confession and conversion. Accounts describe him helping penitents remember forgotten sins. His work joined clear preaching with careful attention to each person. This active ministry would soon be taken away.

Around the age of thirty five, Pacificus became deaf and blind. Painful illness also affected his legs and made walking difficult. For nearly twenty nine years, he could no longer preach missions as before. He continued serving as a friar and accepted responsibilities when able. His world grew smaller.

Pacificus then gave more time to contemplation, a form of prayer centered on loving attention to God. He prayed before the Blessed Sacrament and endured his illnesses with patience. Reports also speak of ecstasies and miracles, understood as works of God. His suffering became a long hidden offering.

Pacificus died in the monastery of Maria delle Grazie at San Severino on 24 September 1721. He had served there as guardian, the friar responsible for the community. His cause began in 1740. Pope Pius VI beatified him in 1786, and Gregory XVI canonized him in 1839.

What can we learn from Saint Pacificus of San Severino today?

  • Spend five quiet minutes before the tabernacle, as Pacificus loved to do.
  • When illness limits your plans, offer one patient prayer instead of complaining.
  • Speak simply about faith to one person who may need encouragement today.

Saint Pacificus shows how a fruitful life can continue when health and former abilities disappear. His preaching served people for only a time, yet his prayer and patience endured for decades. His witness invites us to trust God in both public work and hidden suffering.
