Who was Saint Paul of the Cross?
Paul of the Cross centered his life on Jesus crucified. In eighteenth-century Italy, this priest founded the Passionists, a religious community devoted to remembering Christ’s Passion and sharing its message. He saw the Cross as the great sign of God’s love.
He gave the new community a clear purpose. In 1720, while living in a small cell beside a church, Paul wrote its rule, shaping a life of prayer and service around the Passion of Jesus. A quiet beginning became the foundation of the Passionists.
Prayer and the Eucharist nourished Paul’s devotion from boyhood. He attended Mass daily, received the sacraments often, and spent time before the Blessed Sacrament. His steady attention to Christ gave his later preaching its center.
The first Passionist community faced setbacks. Early recruits left because the life was difficult, and promised help fell through. Paul and his companions continued their mission, trusting that the work of bringing people to Christ could outlast disappointment.
Paul carried the message beyond the retreat houses. He preached missions in poorer parts of Italy and remote islands, bringing the Gospel to places where it was hard to reach. He also helped poor and sick people, seeing Christ in them.
Paul taught that Jesus’ Passion reveals God’s love. When someone near us is suffering, his example invites us to stay present, listen, and offer practical help. We can honor Christ’s Cross by responding with care rather than turning away.
Paul preached the Passion and guided people seeking to return to God. His witness joins contemplation with action: he looked to Christ crucified, then went out to serve and speak of the Gospel. His life shows how love of Jesus can shape our care for others.
