Who was Saint Raymond Nonnatus?

Raymond was born in Portell, a village in Catalonia. His family belonged to the lesser nobility and had little wealth. His mother died during labor. Raymond was then delivered from her body after her death. People called him Nonnatus, which means not born. His unusual beginning would shape his story.

As a boy, Raymond was sent to care for his family farm. The work was ordinary, but his heart was drawn toward God. His father first expected him to remain with the land. In time, he permitted Raymond to enter the Mercedarian Order, a community devoted to freeing captives. A new life opened.

At Barcelona, Raymond received the white habit from Peter Nolasco, founder of the Mercedarians. He learned the order's work among Christians held captive in Muslim lands. Raymond soon became a ransomer, a religious who collected money and arranged freedom for prisoners. His first mission led him across the sea.

In Algiers, Raymond used the money entrusted to him to free many captives. Then the funds ran out. Some prisoners still faced danger, so Raymond offered himself as their hostage. He entered captivity willingly. From that moment, his own freedom became the price of another person's release.

Raymond continued to encourage imprisoned Christians and speak about the faith. He also taught some Muslims who asked him questions. The governor became furious. Soldiers dragged Raymond through the streets and forced him to run between rows of men who struck him. The punishment did not end his witness.

The governor ordered Raymond's lips pierced with a red hot iron. A padlock was fastened across his mouth. The key remained with the gaoler and was given only when Raymond needed to eat. He spent eight months in a dark dungeon. Even there, his suffering became an offering for the captives.

Raymond was finally ransomed and returned to Spain. Pope Gregory the Ninth named him a cardinal, yet Raymond kept his simple religious clothing and humble way of life. The pope later summoned him to Rome. Raymond began the journey, but fever overcame him at Cardona. He died there, far from the city he sought.
