Who was Saint Wilfrid?
Wilfrid worked for a Church united in Christ. A monk and bishop in seventh century England, he helped shape the Church in Northumbria and preached in Sussex. His concern for shared faith also took practical form in care for people in need.
He argued for a shared way to celebrate Easter. At the meeting of Whitby in 664, Wilfrid defended Roman practice before the Northumbrian king and community leaders. The decision helped align the kingdom’s observance with the wider Church.
Rome and Scripture shaped his church service. As a young man, Wilfrid studied in Rome with the pope’s archdeacon, then returned to lead Ripon’s monastery under the Rule of Saint Benedict. Prayer, learning, and common worship formed his work.
Displacement gave his service a new setting. After losing his position as bishop of York and enduring imprisonment, Wilfrid went to Sussex. There he continued preaching the Gospel. His work could take root again even when familiar responsibilities had been taken away.
His preaching went alongside practical help. In Sussex, Wilfrid taught people to fish and shared the catch with those in need. He also freed enslaved people on land given to him. Concern for their dignity gave his words a concrete expression.
Wilfrid’s firmness sometimes brought conflict with rulers and church leaders. He repeatedly appealed to Rome, yet accepted a compromise that left him serving at Hexham and Ripon. When disagreements grow tense today, his story invites care for justice and peace.
His service continued through changing circumstances. Wilfrid built churches and strengthened communities across years of travel and opposition. His witness can encourage anyone starting again after a setback. Ask where your care and abilities could serve Christ in the circumstances before you.
