What is the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary?

Mary's story begins in the quiet faith of Israel. At Nazareth, she received the angel's message and became the Mother of the Son of God. Her whole life was filled with grace because of Christ. The Assumption would become the final earthly gift flowing from that beginning. The promise had already started.

At the home of Elizabeth, Mary sang the Magnificat. She praised God for looking upon his humble servant. She said every generation would call her blessed. Those words reached their fullest meaning in heaven. The Church sees her Assumption as the completion of the grace already shining through her song.

Mary remained united to Jesus through his hidden years, his public ministry, and his Passion. Near the cross, she shared the sorrow of his sacrifice. Her heart had already offered itself with his. When her earthly course was completed, the grace of that union opened into glory. The final passage was near.

The Church teaches that Mary was taken into heavenly glory body and soul. Her body did not remain waiting in the corruption of the tomb. Pope Pius XII defined this truth in 1950. The definition carefully says that her earthly life was completed, without deciding whether she first died. The mystery remains reverent.

The ancient Christian tradition often speaks of Mary's falling asleep, called the Dormition. Some early accounts describe the apostles gathered around her. These writings are not the dogmatic foundation of the Assumption, but they preserve the Church's prayerful memory. In every account, Mary's end is peaceful and wholly given to God.

Mary was taken body and soul into the heavenly glory won by her Son. Her Assumption is a unique sharing in Christ's Resurrection. It anticipates the resurrection promised to his faithful people. In Mary, the Church sees a sign of the hope that Christ opens to us.

The Church now sees Mary as the woman clothed with the sun, crowned with twelve stars. She stands near Christ as a sign of hope and comfort. Her body is already glorified. Her Assumption shows that creation itself is destined for renewal. The glory promised to the Church has appeared in her.
