What is the feast of the Transfiguration?

Eight days after he spoke to them about what must come, Jesus climbed a mountain with Peter, James, and John. He did not go to win crowds. He went to pray. They felt the air turn colder as they walked up stone steps, slow and quiet. What would God show them there.

While Jesus was praying, his face changed. His clothes turned dazzling white. The change was so bright that it made ordinary light seem dull. Peter blinked awake. James steadied himself. John stared, as if the mountain had become a doorway. Then the talk of heaven began.

Two figures appeared, Moses and Elijah, speaking with Jesus. They talked about his departure, the path that would end in Jerusalem. Peter wanted to build places for them, as if he could hold the moment still. A cloud came down and covered everyone. Then a voice said, listen to him.

After the voice from the cloud, the disciples saw Jesus alone. As they descended the mountain, Jesus told them to keep what they had seen private until after his resurrection. Mark records that they obeyed while wondering what rising from the dead meant. They still had much to understand.

Fear pressed on them as the cloud settled. Peter had been eager, and now he was speechless. They had to sit with questions instead of answers. The mountain light did not erase the shadow ahead. Jesus had shown glory, but the road back would still be hard.

Years later, the disciples still talked about what happened. Peter insisted that it was no invented story. He said they saw Jesus in majesty and heard the Father speak from heaven. The light was not only seen. It changed the ones who looked. He calls the message a lamp for dark places, until morning rises.

When the voice finished, the shining ended. Jesus remained. But everything else faded. Moses and Elijah were gone. The disciples looked at each other in astonishment. Luke tells us the last detail with care. They kept silent and told no one what they had seen.

What can we learn from the Transfiguration today?

  • Set ten minutes of prayer on your knees, listening before you speak.
  • When tempted to impress others, do a quiet work of love.
  • After prayer, wait five minutes in silence, like the mountain disciples.

The Transfiguration does not spare us from the coming darkness. It shows what God intends and teaches the way through it. Christ shines in the mystery of prayer, and the Father repeats one command, listen. When we keep hearing and obeying, our hearts can begin to dawn.
