What is a name day?

Many Catholics celebrate not only their birthday but also the feast of the saint whose name they bear. In parts of Europe, the name day is as important as the birthday.

The date comes from the Church’s calendar of saints. When several saints share a name, families usually choose one of them as their patron. Regional calendars can differ: in Germany, for example, Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is celebrated on 19 November instead of 17 November.

A name day is a good occasion to read about your saint and to ask for their prayers.

QUESTIONS

Good to know.

What is the difference between a feast day and a name day?

The feast day belongs to the saint: it is the day the Church remembers them. Your name day is that same day, celebrated by everyone who bears the saint’s name.

What if there is no saint with my name?

Many names come from a saint’s name in another language or a shorter form, such as Hans from Johannes or Lena from Magdalena. If you find no entry, you can still choose a saint as your patron, for example at confirmation.

Can I have more than one name day?

Several saints often share a name. Families usually choose one of them, often the best-known saint or the one whose feast is closest to the birthday.
