What is the feast of the Guardian Angels?
Before anyone spoke of a personal guardian, Scripture showed angels serving God’s care for people. In Genesis, an angel found Hagar in the wilderness after she fled. He spoke to her beside a spring. The lonely place became a meeting with God’s messenger, and Hagar heard a promise about her son.
Later, Israel’s journey through the wilderness brought another promise. God told Moses that an angel would go ahead of the people and guard their way. The angel was God’s servant, guiding the people toward the place God had prepared. The promise carried a warning too: they were to listen to his voice.
The Psalms gave this trust a memorable image. God sends his angels to guard people in all their ways. The words offered comfort to generations who faced danger on the road. Centuries later, Jesus himself referred to a child’s angels in heaven, always before his Father.
In the Gospel, Jesus placed a child at the center of his teaching. He warned his disciples not to look down on the little ones. Their angels, he said, behold the Father in heaven. The brief saying joined the small and vulnerable on earth to heaven’s constant praise.
The first Christians also saw angels at work in moments of danger. When Peter was held in prison, an angel appeared and led him past the guards. Peter reached the house where the believers were gathered. At first, they struggled to believe the servant girl who said he was at the door.
Over time, Christians gathered these scriptural scenes into a wider picture. Angels praise God, carry his messages, and serve his saving plan. The Church’s prayers also entrust the faithful to their care. A devotion to guardian angels grew from this confidence in God’s attentive ministry.
The Church’s prayers for angels appeared in early worship, and devotion took many forms across the centuries. A special commemoration for Guardian Angels was eventually set for October 2 in the Roman calendar. Its place in the calendar recalls the Gospel’s tender words about the little ones and their angels.
