Who was Saint Théodore Guérin?

Anne Thérèse Guérin grew up in Étables, a coastal village in Brittany. Her mother taught her the faith and helped her learn to pray. When she was ten, Anne Thérèse received her first Communion. She told her parish priest she wanted to become a religious sister. That desire would have to wait.

Anne Thérèse was fifteen when her father was killed on his journey home. Her mother became ill with grief, and the young girl took on much of the work of caring for the family. She also sewed to help support them. The choice she had voiced as a child remained with her.

At about twenty five, Anne Thérèse entered the Sisters of Providence, a religious community devoted to teaching and care for those in need. She took the name Sister Saint Théodore. In time, her superiors asked her to lead a small group to Indiana, where they would begin a new mission.

After a long journey, Théodore and five sisters reached Saint Mary of the Woods in October 1840. A muddy path led them to a small wooden chapel in the forest. They went inside and gave thanks before the Blessed Sacrament. Their new home was little more than a farm and a chapel.

The first winter brought bitter winds, illness, and hunger to the little community. The sisters turned a porch into a chapel so they could gather near the Blessed Sacrament. Théodore kept the mission moving through hardship and misunderstanding. Then fire destroyed the season’s crop, leaving the sisters in need.

Théodore’s work soon reached beyond the small settlement. She helped open a school at Saint Mary of the Woods, then supported schools in Indiana and Illinois. The sisters taught children and cared for people in need. Théodore often wrote to France about the mission, placing its hope in divine providence.

Théodore died at Saint Mary of the Woods in 1856. By then, the sisters were running schools and orphanages across Indiana, and their community had endured years of hardship. She was buried at the place where the mission began. Her work had grown from a small wooden chapel into a lasting community.

What can we learn from Saint Théodore Guérin today?

  • Write a short note of trust in God when a plan becomes difficult.
  • Help a child learn something useful, as Théodore’s sisters taught in their schools.
  • Turn one small corner of your home into a quiet place for prayer.

Théodore’s story began with family duties and a vocation that had to wait. In Indiana, she trusted God through isolation, illness, and loss, while helping sisters teach and serve. Her life shows how a mission can take root through steady work, shared faith, and confidence in divine providence.
