What is the feast of the Queenship of Blessed Virgin Mary?

Mary’s queenship began with the child she received from God. The angel announced that her Son would reign forever. She became the Mother of the King. Her crown does not come from earthly power. It comes from Jesus, who is King and Lord. The meaning of her royal dignity was already present.

At Cana, Mary stood among ordinary people with an urgent need. The wine had failed, and the celebration was fading. She brought the problem to Jesus. Then she told the servants to do whatever he said. The Queen appeared as a mother who notices suffering and leads hearts toward her Son.

Near the cross, Mary remained beside Jesus while he gave his life. Christian tradition has long seen her there as Queen of Heaven and Queen of the World. Her royal path passed through sorrow. She shared closely in the work of redemption, and the Church remembered that scene with reverence.

After Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension, Mary remained with the disciples. The Acts of the Apostles places her among those waiting in prayer for the Holy Spirit. Her presence showed the Church her maternal care. She stood at the beginning of the Christian community, quietly accompanying its first days.

Christians in the East and West gradually filled their worship with songs to Mary as Queen. They called her Lady, Ruler, and Queen. Ancient prayers sought her protection in times of crisis. Her royal title grew within the Church’s prayer, where believers trusted the Mother of the King.

The Church teaches that Mary’s Assumption completed her earthly course. She was taken body and soul into heavenly glory. There the Lord exalted her as Queen over all things. Her queenship remains joined to her motherhood. She reigns with Christ and continues to care for the human family.

In 1954, Pope Pius XII established the feast of Mary’s Queenship for the universal Church. The celebration was later placed on August 22, within the octave of the Assumption. The Church honors a Queen whose power is filled with maternal love. Her intercession remains the final detail of the mystery.
