Who was Saint Rose of Lima?

Isabel Flores de Oliva was born in Lima, Peru, into a large Spanish family. Her nurse admired the baby’s beauty and began calling her Rose. At confirmation, Archbishop Toribio accepted that name. Rose grew up with a strong love for prayer, the Virgin Mary, and the Infant Jesus. Her quiet childhood was already changing.

Rose’s family later suffered financial hardship after her father’s business failed. She worked in the garden during the day and embroidered late into the night. Her needlework helped support the household. People praised her beauty, but Rose feared vanity. She cut her hair and wore plain clothing. Her family did not understand her choices.

Rose wanted to give her whole life to God. Her parents hoped she would marry, and the disagreement lasted ten years. She made a vow of virginity and patiently defended it. At twenty, she received the habit of a Dominican tertiary, a lay member of the Dominican order. Then she built a small cell in the garden.

Rose lived in that narrow garden cell for much of each day. She prayed before an image of Mary holding Jesus. According to her recorded testimony, the Child spoke to her and asked her to dedicate all her love to Him. Rose also served poor neighbors in her family home. Soon, the sick began arriving at her door.

Rose cared for abandoned children, elderly people, and sick neighbors, especially Indigenous people who had little help. Her mother once objected to this work. Rose answered that serving the poor and sick meant serving Jesus. She continued sewing, tending the garden, and receiving those in need. Her hidden room became a place of mercy.

Rose’s life also carried a heavy cost. She endured ridicule from relatives and years of interior anguish. She wore a metal crown with sharp points beneath roses, remembering Christ’s Passion. These extreme penances belonged to her unusual vocation and were not a pattern for everyone. Even during spiritual darkness, she remained faithful to prayer.

Rose offered her suffering for sinners, for the spread of the Gospel, and for people who had not yet known Christ. During prayer, she sometimes experienced profound peace and remained still for long periods. Her love centered on Jesus in the Eucharist. She believed every hour belonged to God, including work, rest, and care for others.

During her final illness, Rose stayed with a family who welcomed her into their home. Her sickness lasted many months and brought great pain. She asked God to increase her suffering while increasing love in her heart. Rose died in Lima at thirty one. The city carried her body to burial, and many miracles were later reported.
