Who was Saint Bonaventure?
When Giovanni lay feverish and his father, a physician, gave up hope, his mother turned to prayer with a quiet trust. In that darkness he recovered, and the boy carried the memory of a God who visited him early.
Years later, after earning his studies, Giovanni faced the question, what should he do with my life. He stepped from the bright university corridors into the cloister doors of the Friars Minor, knocking until welcome opened.
Clothed in the habit, he took the name Bonaventure and poured himself into theology that kept returning to Christ. In Paris lectures and disputations, he studied deeply, yet refused to let learning replace prayer.
At the chair of theology, he spoke as if every sentence must catch fire. When opposition tried to silence the mendicants, he answered with teaching on the Gospel meaning of poverty, and hearts learned to breathe with Christ.
Chosen minister general at a young age, he found the Order divided. In letters and constitutions he demanded disciplined observance, reforming what had grown lax, while resisting excesses that broke obedience. Unity cost him patience.
On the road of responsibility, legates arrived expecting honors. They found him in a convent, washing dishes. When he could finally reach the cardinal hat, he preferred to hang it on a tree branch, then return to serving.
At the council in Lyon, with plans for reunion under way, his preaching and counsel carried weight. During the night of July 14 to 15, he died. Yet the Church keeps returning to his words, as if still seeking God.
