Who was Saint Camillus de Lellis?
As a young soldier, Camillus rode out and gambled away everything, even the clothes he depended on. When his illness broke his plans, he learned how quickly the world can strip a man bare.
On Candlemas time, a simple word from a friar pierced him. Camillus fell to his knees, weeping, and heard again that God is everything. From that moment, the noise of vice quieted.
He asked to be received as a Capuchin, but the long wound in his leg stood between him and the cloister. Sent away twice, he did not curse his limit. He turned it into work.
Back at the hospital of the incurables, Camillus became nurse and then superintendent. He insisted that each bed be made with reverence and that the sick be tended both in body and spirit, as if Christ lay there.
When plague reached ships forbidden to dock, Camillus did not wait for permission to help. He sent the ministers aboard, and two companions died of the pestilence, the first martyrs of charity.
Camillus noticed the cruel haste of hospitals, where the dying were sometimes buried alive. He ordered prayers continue for a quarter hour beyond appearance, and faces not be covered too soon.
He gave his congregation a red cross and a rule of service, then left leadership behind so his hands could stay at the beds. By his perseverance, the Church still recognizes him whenever illness asks for love.
