Who were Saint Denis and Companions, Martyrs, and Saint John Leonardi?
John Leonardi wanted to renew the Church. This Italian priest lived in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. He founded the Clerics Regular of the Mother of God, a community of priests. For him, renewal began with Christ and a trustworthy life.
His path began in an apothecary’s shop. John learned to prepare medicines before choosing the priesthood. As a priest, he taught children the faith. He helped them know Christ and gathered others to share this work.
For John, renewal required a trustworthy example. He called those leading the Church to live with integrity. Responsibility for others begins with taking our own standards seriously. This includes how we treat people at home and work.
His service brought him to the sick. John cared for people in Rome during an epidemic. He became ill himself and died. His concern for the Church also took the form of practical attention to people who needed help.
Denis proclaimed Christ in the third century. As the first bishop of Paris, he belongs with Rusticus and Eleutherius among the early witnesses to faith in France. The Church honors them as martyrs: they were killed for their faith. Their witness expresses fidelity to Christ.
The Church remembers his companions by name. Rusticus and Eleutherius share in this witness. Remembering them together draws our attention to people who share our faith today. Who could you thank for supporting you on your own journey of faith?
Their example touches how we treat other people. Denis shows the courage of remaining faithful to Christ. John shows how lived faith contributes to renewal. One question stays with us today: where could your words and your actions agree more closely?
