Who was Saint Francis Borgia?
Francis placed his influence at Christ’s service. Francis Borgia was a Spanish duke in the sixteenth century who became a priest and the third leader of the Jesuits. His life shows how responsibility can become a way of loving others.
His new calling began with family responsibilities. After his wife died, Francis sought admission to the Jesuits. He arranged for his children’s care before leaving his titles behind. Following Christ included faithfully attending to the people already entrusted to him.
Prayer had a place amid public duties. As a husband and royal governor, Francis made time for prayer and Communion. His closeness to Christ grew within a demanding life. An ordinary working day can also include a quiet moment with God.
The former duke helped in the kitchen. Among the Jesuits, Francis carried wood and water and took on ordinary chores. His willingness to serve gave humility a practical shape. A necessary task can become an act of love even when nobody notices.
His leadership brought help to the sick. When an epidemic struck Rome, Francis organized relief and sent Jesuits to care for those affected. The gifts he had developed in public office now helped a religious community respond to urgent human need.
He helped others prepare to share Christ. As leader of the Jesuits, Francis strengthened colleges and supported missions overseas. He gave attention to the formation of those being sent. His service made room for the work and calling of others.
His gifts found purpose through loving service. Francis brought prayer into family life, practical work and leadership. His example invites you to look at what is already entrusted to you. Your abilities can help someone today, however ordinary the task.
